Joymati (1935) – Assamese Film

Joymati is the first Assamese language feature film. Based on Lakshminath Bezbaruah’s play “Sati Joymati” and directed by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, Joymati was released on March 10, 1935. The first ever Assamese movie featured Aideu Handique in the leading role of Joymati. Other actors include Phanu Barua, Mohini Rajkumari and Swargajyoti Barooah.

Joymati is an epic tale of Ahom princes Joymati, who gave her life while saving Gadapani, her husband and future King of Ahom Kingdom. The protagonist in Joymati was a female. It was unique in Indian cinema, at that time.

For shooting of Joymati, Jyotiprasad established his own Chitraban Studios at Bholaguri Tea Estate. Technicians were brought from Lahore. The film was edited in Dhaka, where voice dubbing was done by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala himself.

Joymati Movie Story:

The plot of film Joymati was set during Ahom rule of Assam. In 17th century, Ahom princess  Joymati sacrificed her life to save her husband – Prince Gadapani. Gadapani was in hiding as King Sulikphaa (Loraa Roja) had ordered purging of all Ahom princes. Joymati believed that Gadapani was the only person who could end the terror rule of Sulikphaa. And she was right. Facing brutal and inhuman torture, Joymati died in “Jerenga pothar”. But she saved Gadapani and the Ahom Kingdom. Prince Gadapani later became one of the most successful kings to rule the Ahom Kingdom.
