Chirang District, Assam

Chirang district of Assam is a new district. It was created in 2003 with parts of Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon and Barpeta district. Chirang district started functioning from June 4, 2004. The total area of the district is 1468.42 square km. The headquarters of Chirang district is located at Kajalgaon. There are two Sub-Divisions in the district: Bijni and Kajalgaon Sadar.

Location:

Situated on the foothills of Bhutan, Chirang district of Assam has a plain topography. Geographically, it lies between 26°28′ N and 26°54′ N longitudes, and 89°42′ E and 90°06′ E latitude. Chirang shares it’s boundaries with Bhutan on North; Baksa and Barpeta district on East; Bongaigaon and Barpeta district on South; and Kokrajhar district on West. The distance to Chirang district from Assam capital Dishpur is about 220 km.

The climate of Chirang district is sub-tropical in nature with warm and humid summer followed by dry and cool winter. The average annual rainfall in the area is about 1900 mm. The maximum and minimum temperature varies from 33 to 38° C and 9 to 10° C respectively.

The population of Chirang district is 481,818 (2011 India Census) with a population density of 244 person per square km area. The district has a sex ratio of 969 females per 1000 males. The literacy rate of Chirang district is 64.71%.
