Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Assam

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is one of the most unique wildlife biodiversity hotspots available in Assam. It is located in Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district. The total area covered by the park is about 350 square km. Situated in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra and the Lohit, the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park consists of wet evergreen forests, tropical moist deciduous forest, canebrakes and grasslands. The park is a safe haven for many rare wildlife species such as Asiatic water buffalo, wild horse, Royal Bengal tiger and Capped Langur. So far, 36 species of mammals have recorded from the Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. There are more than 350 species of birds. Moreover, 62 different species of fishes, 2 species of Monitor Lizards, 8 species of Turtles and 8 species of Snakes were also recorded in the park.

The geographical location of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is between 27°30′ N to 27°45′ N latitude and 95°10′ E to 95°45′E longitude. The average elevation of the park is 118 m (range 110-126m) above the mean sea level. Dibru Saikhowa receives about 2300 mm to 3800 mm annual rainfall. The annual temperature ranges from 7° C to 34° C. The rainy months in the park lasts from June to September, while dry and cool winter season lasts from December to January.

Wildlife in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park:

Mammals: Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopard,Clouded Leopard, Asiatic Water Buffalo, Feral Horses, Jungle Cat, Sloth Bear, Dhole, Small Indian Civet, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Gangetic Dolphin, Slow Loris, Chinese Pangolin, Pig Tailed Macaque,Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped Langur, Hollock Gibbon, Asian Elephant, Wild Boar,Samber, Hog Deer, Barking Deer,etc.

Birds: Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Grey Heron, Great Grebe, Indian Shag, Purple Heron, Night Heron,Yellow Bittern,Openbill Stork, Greylag Groose,Common Pintail, Great Pied Hornbill, Pallas’s Fishing Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle,Spot Billed Pelican, Large Whisstling Teal, White Winged Duck, Bear’s Poachard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Bengal Florican, Pale Capped Pigon, March Babbler, Jardon’s Babbler, Black Breasted Parrotbill, Black Stork, etc.

How to reach?

The Dibru-Saikhowa National park is well connected by road, railway and air. The Office of the Divisional Forest Officer is located in Tinsukia, which is just 10km away. Buses, taxies and other mode of transportation are available from Tinsukia town. Nearest railway junction is Tinsukia town. Nearest airport is situated in Mohanbari, Dibrugarh, which is about 40km away from Tinsukia town.
