Kamrup Metropolitan District

Kamrup Metropolitan District is one of the districts in Assam. It is the capital district of Assam and was created on February 3, 2003, by using parts from Kamrup district. The district occupies an area of 127.84 square km and comprises of only one sub-division: Guwahati sadar. The Kamrup Metropolitan District headquarters are located at Guwahati City.

Kamrup Metropolitan district of Assam is situated on the Southern bank of river Brahmaputra. Once known as Pragjyotishpur (the light of the East), Guwahati derives its name from two Assamese words "Guwa" and "Haat". Guwa means areca nut and Haat means market. Today, Guwahati is an important commercial centre in entire North Eastern India. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in South-East Asia.

People:

Kamrup Metropolitan district has a population of 1,260,419 (data from 2011 census). The population density in the district is 2,010 inhabitants per square kilometre. In a decade (2001-2011), the area witnessed a population growth 18.95 %. The Assam capital district has a sex ratio of 922 females for every 1000 males, and a literacy rate of 88.66 %. People from different community, culture and religion lives in the district.

Connectivity:

The Kamrup Metropolitan district is one of the most well-connected districts in Assam. National Highway 31, 37 and 40 meets in this district. The Guwahati railway station serves as the main station connecting entire North-East India with rest of the country. The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport is the largest and the busiest airport in the region.
