Assam Engineering College (AEC), the first undergraduate engineering college in the northeastern India, was established in 1955. It is located in Jalukbari, Guwahati, Assam. The AEC is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education AICTE and offers Bachelor degrees (BE) in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Industrial and Production Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Assam Engineering College, Guwahati also offers Masters courses on Computer Application (MCA), Electrical Engineering (ME), Civil Engineering (ME), Mechanical Engineering (ME). Ph.D. facilities are available in Soil Mechanics and Hydraulics. All the courses offered by AEC are affiliated to Gauhati University.

Assam Engineering College offers a 4-year B. E. program to which admission is made through a Common Entrance Examination conducted on State level. It also offers 18 months M. E. program in Watershed Management & Flood Control and Soil Mechanics of Civil Engineering. Admissions to M.E. program are open to candidates with a B. E./B. Tech. degree in civil engineering. Candidates with an M. Tech. degree in relevant field can proceed to do Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Soil Mechanics and Hydraulics of Civil Engineering. It also offers 3-year Master of Computer Applications ( M.C.A.) program to which admission is made through an State level entrance examination.
