Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya (1924 – 1997) was an eminent Assamese writer and one of the pioneers of Assamese literature. He was the first Assamese to receive Jnanpith – the highest literary award in India.
Biography:
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was born on October 14, 1924. He studied at Cotton College, Guwahati.
“Yaruingam” is one of the best creations of Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya. He was awarded with the Sahitya Akademi award for this novel. His another great work Mritunjaya (the conqueror of death) won him Jnanpith award in the year 1979. Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya was the President of Asam Sahitya Sabha (Assam Literary Society) during 1983-1985.
Birendra Kumar Bhattacharya passed away on August 6, 1997.
