Jayanta Hazarika – Legendary Assamese Singer
Jayanta Hazarika is an Assamese singer, songwriter, composer and music director. He is considered as one of the most popular and most influential singers Assam ever produced. Born on September 20, 1943, Jayanta Hazarika lived only 34 years. But in that short lifespan, he created some of the most popular evergreen Assamese songs, which still mesmerizes Assamese society.
Biography:
Jayanta Hazarika was born on September 20, 1943 in Mangaldoi, Assam. His father was Nilakanta Hazarika and mother’s name was Shantipriya Hazarika. They were six brothers and four sisters. The eldest of them was Bhupen Hazarika.
Jayanta Hazarika was expert in a legion of musical instruments including guitar, mandolin, accordion, tabla, mouth organ and more. Jayanta Hazarika started playback singing in 1963. With Bhupen Hazarika’s film Latighati (1966), he made formal entry in the world of music direction. That was the beginning. Later Hazarika worked in several Assamese feature films as music director.
On August 4, 1969, Jayanta Hazarika tied the knot with Manisha Sengupta of Kolkata. Their son Mayukh Hazarika born on January 13, 1971. Jayanta Hazarika died on October 15, 1977. His premature departure was a great loss for Assamese society.
Works:
Jayanta Hazarika debuted playback singing with Assamese feature film Maniram Dewan (1963). He also gave his voice for films like Lotighoti, Faguni, Chikmik Bijulee, and more. In the 1966 film Latighati, Jayanta Hazarika worked as assistant music director. He also worked as music director in following films: Bonoria Phul (1971), Brishti (1975), Dharmakai (1977), Niyoti (1978) and Natun Asha (1977).
