Surya Kumar Bhuyan
Surya Kumar Bhuyan (1894-1964) was an great historian, writer and poet from Assam. He wrote several historical books including Asom Buranji (Assam History) and biographies in Assamese language. Dr Surya Kumar Bhuyan was also the president of Shillong (1953) session of Asam Sahitya Sabha.
Biography:
Bhuyan was born to Rabilal Bhuyan and Bhubaneshwari Bhuyan on January 27, 1894 in Fauzdari patty, Nagaon, Assam. His schooling started from Nagaon an continued in Shillong. In 1909, Bhuyan completed his B.A. from Presidency College, Calcutta. In 1916, he earned M.A. degree in English from Calcutta University.
Returning to Assam, Surya Kumar Bhuyan joined Jorhat Mission School as a teacher. Later in 1918, he joined Cotton College as a lecturer. British government honored him with Rai Bahadur title in the year 1933. In 1936, Bhuyan went to England to do his Ph.D. from the London School of Oriental and African Studies. Bhuyan retired as the DPI, Assam and became the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. In 1956, Government of India honored him with Padma Shri award.
Surjya Kumar Bhuyan passed away in the year 1964.
