National Institute Of Technology Silchar (NIT Silchar) is an educational Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act. Established in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), the institute was upgraded to the status of an NIT in the year 2002 and was given the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. The campus of NIT Silchar is situated on the banks of river Barak and is spread over 600 acres of land on the outskirts of Silchar.
NIT Silchar offers under graduate (B.Tech), post graduate (M.Tech) and doctoral courses. It has following departments: Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry and Humanities. The National Institute of technology Silchar is a fully residential institution. It has seven hostels for boys’ and two for girls. The capacity of boys hostels is 2000, while the girls’ hostels can accommodate 250 residents.
Courses offered at NIT Silchar:
Bachelor Programme:
Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech): Four years (8 semesters) programme. Students are selected according to their performance in the AIEEE
Master Programme:
Master of Technology (M.Tech.): Two years programme. The admissions are offered on the basis of marks in the qualifying examination (B.E./B.Tech.), performance in interview and the GATE score.
Doctoral Programme:
NIT Silchar also offers doctoral programme. Students are selected on the basis of marks in the qualified examinations and on the basis of interview. The candidates with at least 60 % of marks (CPI 6.5) in M.E./M.Tech and first class with 60 % of marks in M.Sc./M.A are allowed to apply. B.E./B.Tech degree holders with excellent academic record with CPI at least 8 (70 per cent of marks) are also allowed to apply.
